day thirty-seven; july 30th
Woke up early to finish the last of my packing and do a final clean of the apartment. I was expecting the apartment guy around 11 and guess what…he turned up on time! I know, I nearly bowled over. Of course there had to be one last mishap and that was he didn’t have my safety deposit money because they hadn’t organised it. Tried really hard not to twitch, as if I’m going to ever...

day thirty-six; july 29th
Final class today! Which means that it’s my second last day in Florence. :( Although I enjoy the beautiful scenery and monuments I pass on my way to school: the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi and looking up into the hills, I will not miss the long walk! Today in class we continued to work on the photos we scanned into the computer on Photoshop. Obviously it’s ridiculously easy to get the...

day thirty-five; july 27th
Got up early with the intent to climb the Duomo which opens at 9am. Thankfully not too many people had the same idea to get there early so I was close to the front of the line and got in pretty quickly. I had my water and my puffer ready and had taken Nurofen earlier for my hip so nothing could stop me! To my surprise it wasn’t as claustrophobic or difficult as I had been told to expect....

day thirty-four; july 26th
Today in class we developed out film from last week’s night time assignment. I’m really happy with how my photos have turned out which would have had a lot to do with the fact that we each had tripods so no chance for blurriness. It was very cloudy outside and looked like it would rain any minute as I made my way to the Bargello, otherwise known as The National Museum. Sure enough once...

day thirty-two; july 25th
Had a great sleep, still short of breath but yesterday’s rest inside seems to have helped a lot. Meet with Emilie around 10.30am as she and another girl from her class were going out to La Cascine, a large garden and parklands out of central Florence to a pool. Didn’t know what to expect but it was in avery nice setting, at the back of what once may have been a villa, not sure. There...

day thirty-one; july 24th
Had a much better sleep last night, only woke up twice for a coughing fit. Still woke up pretty exhausted though and my ribs and throat are extremely sore from coughing so much so as per the doctor’s orders, I spent most of the day at home either reading or watching TV. Had a sleep in the afternoon and then got ready to meet Emilie and some of her friends from her class for dinner. We went...

day thirty; july 23rd
Woke up early and went on Skype and Mum and Dad told me they had contacted my travel insurance company to find an English doctor I could get into see. They took awhile to get back to me so I ended up looking online and found one really close to me who could see me at 12.30pm. Five minutes later I got an email from the insurance people and he was the recommended doctor! So that worked out well....

day twenty-nine; july 22nd
No class this morning as instead it will be held tonight so we can do our fourth and final assignment: night photography starting at 8pm. Coughing is getting worse - I get this tickle at the back of my throat as if I have blocked sinus but oddly enough I don’t even have a block nose, I just sound like I do. I went to a pharmacy and got some cough mixture which seems to work for a short...

day twenty-eight; july 21st
Cough is even worse today, it sounds like I have a really bad chest cold minus the cold. Stayed home in the morning to do my cleaning duties and then slowly made my way to class. Developed some more prints, I really love how the shadows have turned out in the photos, the gardens had so many beautiful paths covered by vines and trees. Planned a late dinner with Liz and Melissa as Melissa is leaving...

day twenty-seven; july 20th
Had a horrible start to the morning - woke up with a bad cough, very sore hip and on my way to school a “lovely” Asian tourist shoved me out of the way so she could take a photo of some love locks on the bridge which subsequently made trip, though not fall, and break my sandal. And for the next twenty minutes of my trip to school I had to drag my shoe along the ground and deal with a...

day twenty-six; july 19th
Had a sleep in as I was exhaust from all my running about on the weekend (not that I minded). I also didn’t wake up feeling too great so I ended up having a nap after talking to Mum and Dad on Skype. (Is this interesting to read or what!) Just after lunch I went out and ran a few errands and spent the afternoon strolling about old Florence, a pastime I’ve come to cherish! Went around...

veronique asked: Before you leave, spend some time on a pediment of the Ponte Santa Trinita.
And, on night where you are out especially late, go to via del Canto Rivolto 2.

day twenty-two; july 15th
Today we started our third assignment: natural and urban landscape, by making a visit to the Boboli Gardens which is situated behind Palazzo Pitti. I can’t even begin to describe how big this place is, “massive” doesn’t even cover half of it! Though there weren’t many flowers as such, there were mazes of hedges and vines and copious amounts of statues and water...

day twenty-one; july 14th
Bit of a slow day today, didn’t have school until 3pm so spent the morning cleaning and washing = fun! Made my way to the train station around lunch time to buy my tickets to Venice which surprisingly was quick and easy. Off to school for an afternoon of developing and printing. It’s such a touchy process, thank gosh we’re in air-conditioning though otherwise I would not be able...

day twenty; july 13th
Just before I give you my astoundingly interesting recollection of the day (wink wink), I want to apologise for my sudden burst of updates. I’ve had really bad trouble with getting an internet connection and although I was led to believe all was good yesterday, lo and behold, it wasn’t! Had class this morning and we developed our roll of film for the portrait assignment. Not sure how I...

day nineteen; july 12th
Had a good sleep in to refresh myself after yesterday. Surprisingly I’m not sore in any muscles, but my hip is very swollen. I’ve been having a lot of trouble with my access to the internet and with Uni starting in Australia soon I need to make sure I can access any lectures and so on however it cuts out all the time and basically is nothing like what the man who loaned me the...

day eighteen; july 11th
Woke up at about 6am, of course the sun was blaring! Made sure I had all my camera gear and plenty of water and waited for Serena to arrive at the front of the building. Walking through the city centre to the train station felt like we were in a ghost town, there was absolutely no one around! Arrived quite early so as to make sure we wouldn’t miss the group, it got to quarter past seven (the...

day seventeen; july 10th
Explored my side of the river today, I walked away from the Ponte Vecchio along Borgo San Frediano until I reached the original entrance gates and wall of Florence at Porto san Frediano. I then walked towards the Arno and across Ponte Amerigo Vespucci. I’m not sure what they are called but it’s like what they use to hold water in dams and when it overflows the excess water flows over...

day sixteen; july 9th
Had nothing planned for the day - I was thinking of doing the climb to the top of the Duomo but the lines were extremely long! So instead I decided to get lost! I stayed around the central Florence area. I found many interesting things and places. It’s honestly quite hard to really get lost what with the height of the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio’s bell tower making sure they are always...

day fifteen; july 8th
Had a quick chat with Mum and Dad on Skype before making my way to Uni. Today we developed our film! We first had a look at some amazing portraits by renowned photographers. Took a few pointers. We then moved on to the process of developing the film. This takes quite a while! A series of chemicals, starting with of course the developing solution, then the stop, which as the name suggests, stops...

day fourteen; 7th july
Slept in until 8.30 this morning - considering the sun wakes me up at 4.30 every morning it seemed a lot later! Sorted through my photos and then made my way down to the markets again so I could finish my roll of film. Made my way to Uni - on Wednesday’s it starts at 3pm. After our teacher talked us through the process of taking out the film from it’s shell and manually wrapping it...

day thirteen; 6th july
Today we started our first assignment: street photography. After meeting at the University we walked to Piazza della Signoria, otherwise known as the meeting place of Florence which also opens onto the Uffizi courtyard. My teacher told us to change the manual settings for each photo so we could get used to the correct settings for bright and dark scenes. We then moved on to the piazza surrounding...
