day fourteen; 7th july

Slept in until 8.30 this morning - considering the sun wakes me up at 4.30 every morning it seemed a lot later! Sorted through my photos and then made my way down to the markets again so I could finish my roll of film. Made my way to Uni - on Wednesday’s it starts at 3pm. After our teacher talked us through the process of taking out the film from it’s shell and manually wrapping it onto a wheel (can’t remember what it’s called!), we each had a go. You have to do this all in the dark so the film isn’t exposed to sunlight so we use this special black bag which we put our arms into, almost like putting on a long-sleeved t-shirt but stopping halfway. You have to first break off the lid of the film case, take out the film, cut off the tab at the beginning of the film, thread it onto the wheel, lock it in place and then hold the wheel in one hand whilst you twist it with your other. The film gradually rolls all the way onto it. Then you just have to cut it as close to the spool as possible. Don’t worry if this doesn’t make sense - I’m typing this as I think about it! Once that’s been done you have to put it inside a special canister and turn to lock it so no light can get in. It was a tricky process for the first time but I know it will be much easier for the next roll we develop.

For whatever reason, the neighbourhood we were in was having water issues so we couldn’t do the actual developing of the film (you need lots of water)! Instead we went over Thursday’s work and information. It was 6pm by the time we finished so I slowly made my way back along the Arno and across the Ponte Vechhio. I bought a mini pizza from a bakery which was the best one I’ve had yet and for 2 euro I was stoked! Generally it’s 3 euro for one slice and this was about three so I was very full!
